UK Van Sales Back on the Rise

It was a quiet summer for the commercial vehicle market this year, with figures slipping in June and July however August has brought with it an acceleration in sales.

New registrations grew by 15.3% in August compared to just 3.7% in July - showing that July was an anomaly in an otherwise strong year for van sales. The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders point out that June’s figures were at 16.4% making July truly stand out as a blip.

What Sold Most?

According to the data, the strongest growth was seen between vehicles that were 2.5 and 3.5 tonne weight registered. This was to be expected, as these sized vehicles are extremely popular across the UK and make up a large percentage of commercial vehicles registered on the road.

It isn’t just new vans that are increasing these sales figures either - there has also been a large increase in used vehicle sales. This is a sign of improved economic growth and stability within the UK, but it has also been linked to the huge increase in online shopping - requiring more delivery vans to ensure that products get to customers within a reasonable timeframe.

Unsurprisingly, the most popular new van model to be purchased within this period was the ever popular Ford Transit, selling over 12,000 this year. This was followed up by the Vauxhall Vivaro, with 7,500 and the Volkswagen Transporter coming third with around 5,800 models sold this year.
